Living about a half hour from one of the most beautiful freshwater "seas" in the world, you would be an idiot to not take advantage of the glorious sand and water that Mother Nature has bestowed on the State of Michigan. Below are photos from trips to the Big Lake during 2008.
Saugatuck Dunes State Park, June 28
On the way to Saugatuck, Rachael couldn't wait to start playing with her new sand toys in the backseat.

Looking north along the beach toward Holland. The water levels in Lake Michigan are definitely up this year from the lows of last year—news reports say the level is up 8 inches since the same time in 2007 ("Extra 3 trillion gallons of water in Lake Michigan," Chicago Tribune, July 25, 2008). Compare this shot with one taken at almost the same location on August 11, 2007. It's almost shocking to see how much of the wide, sandy beach is now part of the gently sloping sandly lakebottom...
A shot looking due west out into Lake Michigan from our beach towels. The waves were sizeable and, at least in Chris' opinion, a lot of fun!

Here's a shot of that "Rachael smile" that we all know and love.
Chris built this protective seawall while Rachael played on the beach to protect her from the waves. As you can see, it had been breached pretty badly by this point.

As Linda and Chris packed up to head out for the evening, Chris grabbed this shot of the dune grass looking northeasterly from the shoreline.

This is a little website set up by Chris & Linda, Rachael's proud new parents, in response to repeated requests for photographs and the latest information on how Rachael is doing. As many of you know, Chris & Linda welcomed their daughter into the world six weeks early in late June, so the birth and first few weeks of Rachael's life have been a bit less than "usual."
