Nova Scotia Trip 2007, Day 9
Sunday, September 9
This was our last full day in Canada. We began from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island and headed for the north shore and Cavendish, the birthplace of Anne of Green Gables author Lucy Maud Montgomery. Linda's a big fan of the Anne books, so we spent part of the day exploring the sites around Cavendish. After a stop at PEI-founded Cows, we toured part of the island before heading back to the mainland via the Confederation Bridge to New Brunswick. Overnight was spent in St. John, NB.
Chris and Rachael at the Green Gables Heritage Site.

Linda and Rachael in front of Green Gables itself. From the Parks Canada website, "Green Gables, which once belonged to cousins of L.M. Montgomery's grandfather, is the farm that inspired the setting of Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables. Montgomery was recognized as a person of national historic significance by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada shortly after her death in 1942. Green Gables also portrays the lifestyle of many island families in the late 19th century."

Beautiful gardens surrounding the Green Gables homestead.

Another view of Green Gables. Chris, Linda and Rachael then walked two trails: "The Balsam Hollow Trail, which begins as Lover's Lane, is a 30 minute walk through a shady forest along a babbling brook with interpretive signage highlighting Montgomery's love of nature. The Haunted Wood Trail is a 45 minute walk through a woodland area that inspired part of Anne of Green Gables. Interpretive signage highlighting the inspirational sources for Montgomery's writing is located along this trail."

Just a little east of Green Gables is the Site of Lucy Maud Montgomery's Cavendish Home. While the home is no longer existant, you can tour the grounds, read informational displays and visit the visitor center and bookstore.

Here's the preserved foundation of L.M.Montgomery's Cavendish home. From here, the family headed down the road to Cows, a PEI ice cream tradition.

As we headed toward toward the Confederation Bridge, Rachael zonked out in her carseat. She's holding both her new Anne doll she got at Green Gables and the cow she got at Cows.

Here we are getting onto the Confederation Bridge. We've just paid our toll of $40.50, which at late-2007 exchange rates was about US$42.76. Yeah, that's a lot, but first you only pay tolls coming off the island, regardless of the method (bridge or ferry), so we didn't pay for the ferry coming over the day before. Second, it only takes ten minutes to cross to the mainland instead of an hour or more via auto ferry.

A bit of the way out onto the Confederation Bridge. While the whole bridge is pretty high up, there's a big "bump" in the middle to let larger ocean-going ships to pass underneath. The bridge also angles to the right at that point on its way to New Brunswick.

Almost to the "bump" in the Confederation Bridge. From here, we pretty much drove straight to our overnight in St. John—our last night in Canada on the trip.

This is a little website set up by Chris & Linda, Rachael's proud new parents, in response to repeated requests for photographs and the latest information on how Rachael is doing. As many of you know, Chris & Linda welcomed their daughter into the world six weeks early in late June, so the birth and first few weeks of Rachael's life have been a bit less than "usual." |
